The Walnut Grove Cemetery

It is through the work of Mary Helen Allen that this work has been organized and presented here. She gathered the information from the various sources and obtained the necessary permissions for this to be made available.

History:
The Walnut Grove Baptist Church was an offshoot of the earliest documented church in Boone county. A number of articles have been written about Walnut Grove and they don't always agree on all of their facts. We will try to do justice to the history here.

Bethel Church (also called Old Bethel) was formed about 28 June 1817. Switzler (3) notes that Bethel Church was located in the lower part of Perche township in section 16, township 49 North, range 14 West (S16 T49N 14W). We believe he was in error and it was instead S17 T49N R14W. A log church house was constructed in 1818 and presided over by several pastors; Rev. William Tharp 1818-1820, Rev. Thomas Campbell 1820-1829, and Rev. Fielding Wilhite 1829-1835.

By 1835 a division had developed across the nation in the Baptist churches over whether members should actively participate in missions to foreign countries. So strong was this disagreement that half of the membership decided to leave the Bethel church in 1835 and reform in a new location. That new church was called Walnut Grove Baptist Church and it was located slightly to the southwest in the Missouri township at S29 T49N R14W.

Switzler (3 p.993) lists some of the initial membership as : Rev. Fielding Wilhite, William Wilhite and wife, William Pullman and wife, Reuben Elliott and wife, Tyre Harris and wife, Elijah Dale and wife, Geo. W. McQuitty and wife, Zachariah Burnett and wife, Newman T. Mitchell and wife, Issac Doty and wife, and Henry Dooley.

Switzler continues on pages 993-994 with some well written history:
"In 1836 William Wilhite donated one acre of ground for the present cemetery and church site (which has been increased to about three acres), whereon a stand was erected and where the first services were held, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Fielding Wilhite, and Revs A. P. Williams and Thos. Fristoe. The first meetings were protracted, sometimes for a period of two weeks. When the whether was inclement the meetings were adjourned to and held in the Presbyterian church at Rocheport."

"In 1838 the congregation erected a brick church building, 20 by 50 feet in area, and of moderate height, plainly but substantially finished and furnished. Here services were held until 1847, when the present church was built. It is a frame, 40 by 60 in area and 18 feet in height, without spire or bell. Within the same inclosure and contiguous to the church is the Walnut Grove cemetery. The first interments therein were those of Mrs. Enoch Taylor, in 1836, and Sampson Wilhite, Sr., in 1837. Subsequently more than two hundred graves have been added. As no records have ever been kept, many of these graves cannot now be identified. But known or unknown, recognized or unrecognized, the tenants of these silent abodes, the fathers and mothers, and brothers and sisters of the present generation of the communicants of Walnut Grove sleep well. Whether the sun of summer shines upon them, or the winds of winter blow over them, alike they silently lie, awaiting the Great Day; and year by year their descendants and posterity are gathered to them to become in their turn waiters in the silent chambers."

"The first pastor of Walnut Grove was Rev. Fielding Wilhite, who first began his labors in Old Bethel in 1829, and closed them in Walnut Grove church in 1844. His successors have been:-
From 1849 to 1850 - Morton Mothershead
From 1850 to 1857 - Noah Flood
From 1857 to 1858 - Green Carey
From 1858 to 1860 - Robt. N. Harris
From 1861 to 1866 - Noah Flood
From 1866 to 1871 - John Murphy
From 1871 to 1872 - Noah Flood
From 1873 to 1881 - Jno. M. Robinson
From 1881 to the present - W. Pope Yeaman"
[we have a copy of a book written on W. Pope Yeaman]

"The present officers are the following : Deacons - N. G. Mitchell, Sr., J. H. Sampson, N. G. Mitchell, Jr., and Stephen Elliott. Clerk - J. H. Sampson. Treasurer - J. S. Denham. Present membership, not reported. The church and cemetery are located about the center of section 29, township 49, range 14."

The church building has long ago been demolished. Perhaps it was in 1941, although that could be in error. The article that mentions the demolition of Walnut Grove by name seems to refer to the history of Old Bethel in much of its text.

In 1975 Estil Haun, a descendant of several of the people buried in the Walnut Grove cemetery, visited the site and was dismayed by the sorry condition of the property. But his ailing health that later lead to a heart attack in 1978 prevented him from doing any improvements. By the spring of 1984 his condition had improved significantly, and he decided it was time to do something about the condition of the cemetery.

For the next two years he would visit the cemetery two or three times a week and incrementally remove the trumpet vines, picking up dead limbs and remove small trees. Occasionally he would have some company, but much of the work was done in solitude, which he enjoyed, sometimes forgetting which century he was in while working among the stones of the early 1800s.

He then set to uprighting stones, and reassembling broken ones where possible. Estil and Ruth Haun began the work of reconstituting the Walnut Grove Cemetery Association, and worked to get the legal paperwork brought up-to-date so the Association has a proper deed to the land. Seeing the condition of the cemetery today, it is a wonder what Mr. Haun has done in reclaiming this cemetery and we thank him sincerely for his hard work.

As always, funds for upkeep and preservation are limited. For those that wish to contribute to the upkeep of this cemetery in the memory of relatives buried there or to preserve this piece of history, donations can be sent to:

Road map

  1. From the Columbia, Stadium Blvd - I-70 intersection, (I-70 exit 124), head west on I-70. Continue about 6.8 miles to exit 117 (Routes O - J), exit and head north on Hwy J.

  2. Proceeding north on J about 1.0 miles, you will reach an intersection at Hwy 40 (you must stop there). [Alternatively you could have exited I-70 at exit 121 (Midway) and taken Hwy 40 to this intersection.]

  3. Continue north on Hwy J about 2.6 miles where you will see an exit on the left for Rocheport Gravel Road. You will pass intersections for Walnut Grove Lane (DO NOT take this exit as it does not lead to the Walnut Grove cemetery), and Graham Roads until you reach Rocheport Gravel.

  4. Turn left (west) onto Rocheport Gravel Road and follow it approximently 1.2 miles where it intersects Tucker Collins road on the right (north), you will want to bear left or south and continue another 0.2 miles.

  5. The Walnut Grove Cemetery is very evident on the left (east) side of Rocheport Gravel Road. Houses nearby have addresses of 12340 and 12345 Rocheport Gravel Road. Please park so that you do not block any lanes.

Overview of Cemetery:
The Walnut Grove Cemetery runs along Rocheport Gravel Road and is fenced with a new chain link fence. There is a unlocked gate next to the road. Estil Haun and the cemetery association have placed a nice sign identifing the cemetery at the entrance.

The cemetery grounds are a long rectangle, with a smaller attachment at the rear. From the small remaining rock wall, this is where the Walnut Grove church stood many years ago, long since demolished. The church faced south and it is believed that Walnut Grove Lane once extended all the way to Rocheport Gravel Road in front of the church. The baptistry remains at what was the back of the church and thanks to a donation by Alice Denham Henderson, it has a cover (roof) over it today.

(we plan to take some overview photos of the cemetery and include them here soon).

Visiting guidelines:
This cemetery is adjacent to a rural road and you can access the cemetery without trespassing on private property, although please use care in not blocking neighbors driveways or the main road. You should be able to visit the cemetery any time common sense would allow.
